An
obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Haseltine has made the advancement
of women's health her life's work. She founded the Society for Advancement
of Women's Research in 1990 to bring the issues of women's health
to the national research agenda. Dr. Haseltine questioned why women
were virtually ignored in so many forms of health research and fought
for increased funding. Haseltine has taught us that it's not enough
to simply include women in men's health studies. Gender differences
have been found to affect everything from the way men and women
experience a heart attack to how they process the hormone serotonin,
which can affect depression. These findings hold huge implications
for the practice of medicine and will lead to more accurate diagnosis
and more effective treatments for men and women.
